Alongside 24 other experts, Our Client Manager, Andy Mundy, told PR Week what he thought would improve mental health in the comms sector in just 24 words.
The story comes after a recent PR Week article revealed that 91 percent of PR professionals had struggled with mental health within the last 12 months.
External factors are largely to blame, especially following the recent pandemic. However, many of the reasons are more internal, such as unrealistic workloads and toxic work cultures.
Andy believes that improving client management is key to alleviating stress in the industry.
Set clear boundaries with clients. Accepting work that doesn’t add genuine value to the client puts pressure on the team to reach unrealistic targets.
What Andy speaks about is a common issue within the sector.
Agencies can make the mistake of onboarding clients who they lack synergies with or overpromise on deliverables, when they should have been honest and upfront.
Failing to push back on unrealistic proposals when the agency should know better only leaves employees agitated and stressed, and eventually struggling with burnout.
The agency suffers a vicious circle of failing to produce unachievable results, leaving both the agencies workers and clients unhappy.
The comms industry has its issues like many others. So, it was great to contribute alongside our peers to better our work environment and client service.
